Breakdown Call (bCall)

Breakdown Call (bCall)

Breakdown Call (bCall) is a convenient in-car telematics feature in smart vehicles designed to connect drivers to a dedicated call centre at the touch of a button during non-accident vehicle breakdowns to receive professional roadside assistance. Unlike the life-saving emergency response role of Emergency Call (eCall), bCall focuses more on resolving everyday motoring hiccups, serving as an essential service that enhances the overall vehicle ownership experience and peace of mind.

Functional Role and Service Scope

bCall is primarily designed for scenarios where a vehicle is immobilised due to mechanical failure, a flat battery, a tyre puncture, or running out of fuel. Once the driver presses a dedicated physical button inside the cabin or activates the service via the infotainment screen, the vehicle initiates a voice call to a designated call centre while transmitting critical data—including precise GPS location, vehicle model, and the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)—to the backend system. Upon receiving these details, customer service agents can swiftly coordinate and dispatch roadside assistance resources, such as towing, mobile battery charging, spare tyre replacement, or on-site minor repairs. Compared to conventional roadside assistance hotlines, bCall eliminates the need for drivers to manually describe their location and vehicle details, making the entire support process far more seamless and efficient.

Technical Implementation and Operation

The bCall feature relies on the vehicle's Telematics Control Unit (TCU) and built-in cellular communication module. Its operational workflow typically entails: user activates the button -> vehicle transmits a request containing location and diagnostic/breakdown data to the cloud -> cloud platform compiles and routes the data to the call centre -> customer service agent establishes a voice call and coordinates assistance.

Inside the cabin, the bCall function is usually activated via a dedicated button on the overhead console or the rear-view mirror, while select models also allow operation through the central infotainment display. To prevent accidental activation, users are typically required to press and hold the button for about two seconds, after which they will be connected directly to an agent to explain the breakdown situation.

Differences from eCall

The fundamental difference between bCall and eCall lies in the nature of the situation and the level of urgency. eCall is dedicated to severe traffic accidents, automatically triggering upon collision to connect to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) with the highest priority as a mandatory life-saving feature. In contrast, bCall is a convenience-driven service tailored for non-emergency mechanical breakdowns, manually initiated by the driver to resolve motoring issues, and carries stronger commercial and customer-care attributes.

Usage Considerations

For bCall to operate normally, the vehicle's connected car telematics services must be active and within cellular network coverage. Connectivity may be unavailable in certain basement car parks or remote areas with poor signal. Furthermore, bCall service policies vary across different car brands and models, including the complimentary subscription period and towing mileage limits. Vehicle owners are advised to clarify the specific terms with authorised dealers upon vehicle purchase, and in critical emergencies, always prioritise calling public emergency hotlines such as 120 or 122.
